MARY HARJU (she/her)
Mary discovered yoga in 2001 through a book that included the twelve classical yoga postures of Sivananda Yoga. Within a year of beginning her practice in her living room, she began to seek out teachers in her hometown of Philadelphia, PA, embarking on a more than 20-year journey through the disciplines of hatha yoga, kundalini yoga, hot yoga, Ashtanga yoga, Anusara Yoga, Power Yoga, jnana yoga, bhakti yoga, and ayurveda. As a working artist, educator, and bookseller, she relied on her daily practice to stay in balance; it spoke to something in her that was unchanging and eternal. It was through practice of regular meditation that she found her calling to become a yoga teacher. In 2013 she received her 200-hour certificate from Raja Yoga and Meditation Center in Philadelphia and immediately began teaching yoga and meditation. In 2016 she completed her 300-hour certificate in Ayurvedic yoga at Yoga On Main in Manayunk, PA. She is certified as well in Yin Yoga and Power Yoga, and has completed trainings in Prana Flow Vinayasa, alignment-based yoga, and yoga nidra.
Mary began teaching yoga full-time in 2017 and, with her background and training in anatomical illustration and Ayurveda, found a livelihood leading trainings in anatomy and physiology to yoga teachers through various schools and yoga studios. In 2018 she relocated to Portland, OR, where she teaches in yoga studios, offices, and classrooms. Her classes are fun and linked to seasonal cycles, with functional movement, philosophy, storytelling, and playful exploration.
